OCTOBER, TIMES FOR FUN AND TIMES FOR LEARNING
By: Elizabeth Zehner

October has been known for many events, Halloween, All Saints’ Night, All Souls’ Night, All Hallows Eve, Samhaim, Mischief Night, and finally the month of the Blood Moon. But there is one very important meaning to October, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
It has been said by the American Cancer Society (ACS) that, “1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.” This is a relatively small number in my family I have eight female relatives and anyone of us can be diagnosed. Many sites and organizations have been created in order to face this epidemic on the female gender. Nbcam, the American Cancer Society, Breast cancer awareness month and every doctor has knowledge and understanding.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is a site dedicated to informing the world of the danger of breast cancer, “reaching out to women with several key messages, most notably, the importance of early detection through annual mammography screening for women over 40, or earlier for women at increased risk. (Nbcam.com)” Nbcam is doing its part and the breast cancer site, thebreastcancersite.com is another major contributor to the cause.
It has informed the world of the cause just as others but it goes a step further, “since its launch in October 2000, the site has established itself as a clear leader in online activism and in the fight to prevent breast cancer deaths. (thebreastcancersite.com)” It raises money to give free mammograms for women who otherwise would have not been able to afford one. I know personally the great responsibility of yearly mammograms.

My mother went in for her yearly and a lump was found in her left breast. For two weeks she kept this information from her family. Fearing the worse and when she finally broke down and told us, we were frightened. I was worried and stressed because my mother is my only parent and a large part of my life. Knowing the fear is an eye opener. Breast cancer goes from being a big fear of knowing it exists but thinking all the while it won’t happen to me. But it did and it does. Please consider your life and the life of those you love. Get a mammogram. Protect your breast.

I agree
I agree with you on breast cancer being a serious thing. And you know something else? Men can get it too. I think I should get a mamogram done soon myself even before 40. My friend discovered that she had breast cancer and she was only 38 yrs old. She and her mother discovered tumors in their breast at the same time and under went chemo together. I wonder if they shared their weed too. No just kidding. That was one perk to overcome the nausea and vomiting. :)

I didn't know that men could get it too. That's a point to ponder. Thank you for your comment.

I heard that men can get it too. But the chances are lesser compared to women.
